A moment of reflection this evening, as today it was announced that Levon Helm has died aged 71.

The one responsible for putting The Band together from 1961 through to 1976 with a career culminating in the classic of The Last Waltz. Helm’s voice was the one behind the drums, the one that made the hair stand up on your arms!

As an acclaimed drummer and guitarist, it was his voice that rang out in “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down“, a song that reflected so much that was going on in the late Sixties and early Seventies, and of course “The Weight“, the classic from “Easy Rider” back in ’69. It was Helm who co-wrote “Life is a Carnival” and it was Helm who, whilst Robbie Robertson was the lead in The Band, kept it all going to the pleasure of so many for so long, including me.

And so it came to pass and in passing, he will be sorely missed but live on through his eclectic musical talent.
